ALDI is the brand name for two major global discount supermarket chains. It has over 10,000 stores in 18 countries with a turnover of about €50 billion yearly. It was founded in 1946 by German brothers Karl and Theo Albrecht based on their mother's store located in Essen, Germany.
German-based ALDI specializes in the sales of staples such as food, toilet paper, beverages, sanity articles and several other inexpensive household items. In addition, ALDI has weekly special sales which have on offer pricier items like electronics, tools, appliances and computers.
ALDI has 620 stores in the United Kingdom where it has won the supermarket of the year for two consecutive years, in 2012 and 2013. Also, ALDI is ranked as the sixth largest supermarket chain in the United Kingdom.
