Stayed at the Sun a few months back,we understand it's an old building but the noise in the rooms from the plumbing which was continuous and squeaky flooring was a bit bad ! , pud side off it was ok, there's better places!.

Excellent, traditional Lakeland pub. Probably the best in the village.

Very friendly and lively hotel and bar but all in a good way. Noticeable that other pubs in Coniston tend to attract more visitors than locals, whereas the Sun has a good band of locals that make for a convivial atmosphere. Not eating meat we found the official menu a bit limiting for dinner, but on talking to staff it seemed more vegetarian options could be available - on the Sunday evening we had an enormous nut roast with all trimmings and sensitivity prepared fresh vegetables. Perfectly cooked fish, great sticky toffee and excellent beers. Hotel well positioned for walking directly up all the local mountains including the Old Man, Wetherlam, Dow Crag and Swirl How with no need for a car. Staff wonderful, ditto the owners and the other guests. Very enjoyable long weekend.

Eclectic, eccentric character pub perched on the hill above the beautiful village of Coniston. We stayed for a night and thoroughly enjoyed the hotel, the ale and the service. The breakfast included a full English and was five stars.

Great pub, originally the railway station hotel so the building has character. Beer garden is great in the summer.

After a tiring ramble up Coniston Old Man we went to the Sun Inn for some tea. We sat by the fire to warm up and filled ourselves with beer and pie. The Sun had a great atmosphere and the staff were lovely, we were very happy campers by the time we were heading back to the campsite to sleep it all off. Would absolutely consider staying here in the future.

This has always been my favourite pub in Coniston. Lovely meal, roaring fire and a great selection of real ales.

A good hotel for walkers. Room a bit small and toilet had a few problems with water trickling all night. Staff were lovely and very friendly.Food & drinks: Great breakfast very good. Had a good choice of gluten free - fish and chips for evening meal.

Nice old fashioned pub accommodation. Beautiful views. On a hill but only couple of minutes walk to Coniston and on route to climb Coniston Old Man. Lovely verandah for breakfast. Not suitable for disabled as many steps and no lift. Noisy beer garden and busy pub but quiet for sleep with windows closed. Comfy beds and clean room. Parking limited but available. Staff efficient and friendly Enjoyable stay. Would recommend. Good value for money.Rooms: Old fashioned but clean and comfortable. Small TV. Huge en suite bathroom. Fabulous views. Coffee/tea/ biscuits provided.Nearby activities: Right in Coniston where you can find cafes, restaurants and small shops. Walkers/Climbers paradise. Lovely little park for children. Old Man of Coniston walk popular. Many activities available with water sports, Boat trips on the Lake and the Gondola. Handy for Ambleside, Hawkshead, Tarn How's etc.Safety: Very old hotel and steps up to hotel from car park so care needed. Also steep quite narrow stair treads up to rooms so found it difficult taking luggage up and down. Super bathroom but bath very slippy when taking a shower. Bath mat needed.Walkability: Just be aware hotel is up a hill but only a couple of minutes walk down to Coniston village and the Lake which are all flat.Food & drinks: Breakfast was adequate but not huge choice. Would be limited if staying for more than a few days. Full English was good quality and cooked well. Not enough staff on at night and very busy so huge queues at the bar. Didn't have food other than breakfast so can't comment.

We stopped in here for a drink after a long day of hiking and mountain climbing. That was the best tasting Aspall cider ever! Learned lots of historic facts about the town and the hotel on this visit. Beautiful outdoor seating overlooking the area we hiked. I look forward to returning again someday.
