The George looks and feels like a classy establishment but when you're actually inside you realise they are understaffed, the menu is an absolute disgrace, kitchens closed at random times due to staffing issues and they pretend to cater to vegans by listing it as an allergen option but the reality is if you're vegan you can only eat olives or peppers from their starter menu. I'd prefer you not pretend to cater and just own being a non dietary diverse establishment. The one saving grace this place has is the personality of the staff, the bar manager clearly has a passion for what he does and is incredibly insightful and knowledgeable when it comes to drinks.Treat your staff better and adjust your menu and you would be absolutely smashing it especially when in such a central picturesque place.

Terrible service.Went for lunch, very quiet, waited for a menu for 20 minutes without being greeted or served at all despite staff being present and clearing tables next to us. On our way out we saw another couple standing waiting to be seated for 10 minutes, no one acknowledged them either, glad we didn't bother.Went to the Standard down the road, busier, much better atmosphere had food and drinks on our table within 3 minutes of arriving. Excellent food and service.

The parmesan and rosemary chips were normal chips with some parmesan shards on top of them. The shards were not even melted and had no rosemary at all. The rice in my risotto was cooked correctly but I did not enjoy the flavour. I think it was the tarragon oil they added. It completely killed the flavour of the mushrooms.Service was very friendly. We struggled a few times to get the attention of the staff.

My wife and I stayed for two nights this week. Staff very friendly and extremely helpful. Went out of their way to help us. Food delicious. Service a little slow but food well worth the wait! The hotel was very busy. Lots of steps in hotel so not accessible for everyone. We are over 65 but we coped with stairs. Ideal location in centre of high street. Automatic computer access at hotel so very convenient. We will definitely stay again. Not everything written down in room but if in doubt just ask the reception staff. We had s TV control that didn't work and they came up, checked it and then replaced it. Cannot compliment the staff highly enough.Rooms: Lovely double room with brilliant shower. We looked out over front of hotel but surprisingly quiet. We both slept soundly both nights. Steps and stairs up to room so you get fit if you weren't before! Tea, coffee, hairdryer, all provided.Nearby activities: Market on Thursday a couple of minutes walk from hotel towards the train station. Lots to see nearby, river, churches, castle and great views.Safety: Take care in town and in hotel. Lots of steps and slopes but if you are careful you should be fine.Walkability: Lots of steps and stairs buy we are in our late 60's and coped fine. The town is up and down as well so great for fitness!Food & drinks: Bar quite expensive as you would expect on a quality hotel. Lots of pubs, restaurants and cafes within easy walking distance.

The owners of this hotel are despicable people. They treat their staff like dogs and make fun of the guests behind their back. The rooms may be OK but they are overpriced and underwhelming. Please avoid staying here don't give them your hard earned money.

Wonderful restaurant in beautiful Rye. The service was excellent and the food was great. We started with cod cheeks with pea puree and white crabmeat with brown bread. We then chose steak with brandy and mushroom sauce with a side of fries and a seafood stew. We finished with poached pears and roasted figs and a sticky toffee pudding and coffees. Would definitely recommend this place.

I love this hotel. Everything was wonderful from our greeting and information exchange to our final cosy rest in front of the log burner in reception before our train. The interiors are so tasteful, characterful and a nice blend of formal/informal which makes the hotel both stylish yet upmarket homely.

Had an excellent stay for my boyfriend's birthday.Every member of staff was exceptional; very friendly, helpful, courteous. They seem to employ lots of young people which is great.Amazing cocktails in the bar & food in the restaurant. They also kindly catered to our greyhound & didn't mind him cuddled up on the sofa by the fire with us.Only improvement would be the bedroom - the decoration is a little tired, with jazzy 60s/70s sort of wallpaper which could do with updating (& doesn't fit with the Georgian style of the house). ...But we were in a building at the back so I imagine the rooms in the main building are nicer, (judging by the pictures on the website, those ones look impeccably decorated).A truly wonderful weekend. We'll be back!Rooms: Not the best but, as I say, we were in a back building & it didn't look like the website photos so I imagine the rooms in the main house are nice.Walkability: In the centre of RyeFood & drinks: Excellent (especially the cocktails)

Very good hotel in the centre of Rye offering excellent quality rooms, great service and superb food.Of note is the fact that car parking us a walk away and some of the upper rooms have multiple level stairs so mention any mobility issues when bookingIt's not the cheapest hotel but in my view not expensive for what you get and was extensively refurbished following an unfortunate fire a few years ago so combines listed historic features with modern features and kitchen etc. An example was the excellent bar staff who demonstrated they were true mixologists as they prepared some excellent cocktails. We will return.Recommended
