Clacton's main Post Office relocation has helped put a number of shops in the High Street, including Sainsbury's out of business. The resulting store is small, overcrowded and has hollowed out WHSmith. Got a heavy parcel to drop off? Be careful as cars aren't allowed down this street between 10am-4pm. The best Post Office in Clacton now is Magdalen Green in Old Road.

I never got round to writing this review until a colleague mentioned about how bad the service was at the post office, which jogged my memory from a few years ago as, hands down, the worst customer service I have ever received from a company that I was parting with my hard-earned cash to use. I made some notes in my phone as I was intending to make a formal complain as life got in the way...Here is what happened:I took a parcel here to be dropped off, and dealt with a teller called Connie. She told me that I had clearly done something wrong because I had underpaid for the label. I explained it was impossible, because I used their website, and am always overly cautious with regards to weighing and measuring (I tend to add on some extra grams/centimetres). She checked the dimensions, and apparently they were all correct...Apparently I'd done something wrong but she could not tell me what, since the label appeared correct it was just deemed that the postage I?d paid online was too low and I was forced to pay a nominal 0.50p price difference. What stuck me most about the incident was how accusatory and hostile the teller was...It was clear that the Post Office were in NO way going to accept any blame for the problem - a mentality that seems endemic when you consider the computer scandal, and how the Post Office fought that until the bitter end only to be found completely to blame. Equally, all those years as a public sector company have made their mark, where miserable tellers with attitude refuse to deliver the customer service expected from a private sector company.Connie was extremely rude, despite explaining I did not understand why I had to pay an additional charge for an inexplicable reason, it seemed like a scam. Surely if I paid the wrong amount, it would be easy to advise the customer why there was an underpayment, e.g incorrect measurements. How am I supposed to know they?re not pocketing the difference?Either way, I made a complaint via my partner who used to work at Royal Mails head office, and it was 100% an incorrect charge that the Post Office add on as a handling fee for Royal Mails parcels - that they were not supposed to charge. The branch was spoken to and advised of this. However the sour taste in my mouth still remains, and as such I never use this disgraceful racket, posing as a legitimate business. Instead I use Parcels2Go, much cheaper, more convenient and completely devoid of the surly human interaction that the Post Office offers....And it isn't just this branch, I've been to several and they are all sad, soul -less places that one does not choose to visit, rather is forced to out of sheer necessity. Thankfully competition exists, and the monopoly they once had is now diminishing.
