Best option in the city centre. Grim exterior, very mixed customer service - some polite and some rude and abrasive.

Only went in for a collection, but the staff were helpful and readily available.

Bananas are OK not old.NO deli food or fish munger. And nothing on special. But, I prefer this store than Tescos it's bigger with more options. Only thing is, unlike New Zealand and Australia here the staff don't pack your goods. In Australasia staff are trained as to packing without contamination, and properly stacking goods carefully for the Customer. We pay for this service. Why aren't we getting good customer service? There is no hello how are you today or thank you have a nice day?

Having lost M&S, this is now the only decent sized supermarket in central Colchester. Sadly it is being managed like a glorified convenience store rather than capitalising on obvious potential as the most convenient supermarket for a large inner city population.Stock levels are often low, items often out of stock for a week at a time, and worse of all, the stock range literally appears to be shrinking week by week - I have lost count of the number of products that you used to be able to buy there than you no longer can - there is now next to no brand choice for anyone wanting to do a weekly shop there. You would have thought following the store refurbishment and the loss of M&S from the city centre a year ago, that they would have significantly expanded the range to capture the doorstep market of a large city centre residential population who were accustomed to having much more local choice than the very basic range that this store now offers. I don't want to have to use my car to endure the inconvenience and traffic hell of Stanway, and having a properly stocked store when it's the only viable local option is not an unreasonable expectation.I'm told by store staff that ordering is now all centralised, but clearly those at the top of the chain haven't the slightest clue about the local market - THE STOCK ORDERING STRATEGY FOR THIS STORE IS CLUELESS AND UTTERLY SHAMBOLIC in the circumstances. It's a self-fulfilling prophecy that people will increasingly not expect to do a weekly shop there as they can't access a decent range of products and consequently a very restricted range of offers.Talk about missing a commercial open goal and opting to score an own goal instead, this is absolutely clueless management taken to an extreme.

The incredible shrinking stock range of Colchester Sainsburys. As others have commented, despite a refit last year, the range of goods stocked here is very narrrow for a store of its size, and seems to be shrinking week by week. I rely on this store, and would spend much much more (probably twice as much) if it actually had a decent range. But since the closure of M&S, now sadly now forced to do a weekly shop in Waitrose for luxury items as I certainly wouldn't consider going to Sainsburys in Tollgate - too far and don't want to reward a strategy that probably is trying to force people to go to Tollgate.
