Whilst some of the huge retail chains start abroad, Costcutter is one that started right here in the UK in 1986. After the first store saw success in York during the 1980s, the brand grew and more shops opened across the country. In 2017, there are now 1,700 Costcutter locations selling groceries and various convenience items to local communities. More recently, the company managed to take over many SPAR outlets because the owners saw Costcutter as a cheaper alternative. For the most part, they haven't tried to enter into a competition with the supermarket giants of Tesco, Asda, and Morrisons. Instead, they have stuck to much smaller outlets and convenience stores and this has slowly become a part of their brand identity. Since the majority of the UK now has a Costcutter nearby, it is easy to 'nip out' and grab a few small items whenever necessary.
