I took my wife here for our anniversary a few weeks ago because it has always been one of my favourites and it certainly did not disappoint. The food was impeccable as always, especially if you embrace the nose to tail ethos. The wine list offers great interest at a variety of price points, and the service was absolutely on point and very generous in honour of the occasion. It is also in a great part of London to explore (although I may be biased, having once lived around the corner). In short, I wholeheartedly recommend eating here!

Forget the bad reviews. Went with our adult children and we just were floored by this establishment. Cool, hip spot and not pretentious at ALL!! We 4 Yanks were made to feel welcome. The food was just off the charts amazing.

unfortunately pretentious. just because your selling bread and wine doesnt mean you need act like your a member of the royal family. I asked to buy a 5 pound loaf of bread, answered no those loafs are for tomorrow. if u sell it today or tomorrow does it matter?, and if so just be polite about it please. Felt totally belittled and dismissed from the jumped up middle class click. Very sad that this happens in this part of london where we should all look out for each other rather than down.

Absolutely god awful. It feels to me their concept if most of their dishes are based on a dare (will they eat this) This is not a meal that your are going to relish, but something you?ll feel you have to survive. (If you don?t like fish you?re screwed) Best I could do is try the duck liver toast as a starter and tepid grouse that was so under cooked (and Bloody) it was inedible. Most of their meat dishes are either based on the cheapest cuts of meat you can get either offal, kidney, sweat bread or it?s cold (intentionally), ?.. good luck.

It's one of our favorite restaurants in London. The food is excellent. The ambience, concept and service are very special. I love the marrow! I strongly recommend!

Beautiful English food with very good service. Lots of great food was eaten by our party. Deviled crab was amazing, also the best chips I?ve had in London ( I?m sure they were fried in beef tallow), I had braised pork that was lovely. Just a great dining experience.

An amazing restaurant with some of the best food I?ve ever had. Lovely ambiance, great service and reasonable prices! A real find in London.

My first visit to Bread & Wine was as good as Smithfield or Marylebone. I just love the food so much. So many restaurants copy but none really get near it. Even the cocktails beat 'the best' cocktail spots in the city. Service always attentive & detailed, without ever being pushy. Plus a different menu every-time with changing specials. Go!

Overpriced and overrated. Came with a big group. It wasn?t clear online that they very much push you to do sharing plates, despite saying you can order starters and mains. We opted for the latter and the waiter made it obvious he wasn?t pleased. Water not topped up, bread basket not refilled, kept having to flag down the waiter for drinks - no one checked in on us, restaurant feels like a canteen with bright lights. Food took literal hours to arrive and was then really quite basic and straightforward, nothing special for both the cost and the wait. Wouldn?t return.

In London for a theatre visit and to visit my ?hipster? son who lives in Shoreditch We are ?from the North? and regularly eat out in quality restaurants so after being initially pleased with his lunchtime booking at St John?s Bread and Wine I became a little concerned when I read some negative on line reviews I shouldn?t have been concerned, in short the meal was a triumph Great food at reasonable prices The 2 highlights for me were the smoked mackerel and the crispy pig skin A really good ambiance with attentive but not intrusive service made this an ideal lunchtime meal

So this is hipster place, which is fine, if the food was better. And they added a bit of a service. We got there at 8pm and were seated at 8.15. Only at about 830 someone came to take our order or wine. By that time, some of the menu items were not available. And the pig head is not that. Its just ham hock while listed as pig head on the menu. I went for grilled ox tongue that tasted like bologna. I left about half on the plate. I asked for some mayo for my chips and was brought aioli instead. My other half had faggots, which she said were great, but we both agreed that the 3 half of Jerusalem artichokes bathed in caramelized onions were so-so. The service was really terrible. We didn't get our food until about 9.15. The service staff seemed apathetic and ruining the place for everyone.

We had a lovely evening here, the service, atmosphere and food were all great. Stand outs for us were the Welsh rarebit which was scrumptious and the razor clams, we've eaten a lot of razor clams in the past, usually in Spain but these were next level. Highly recommended.

I have walked past here many a time before shopping in Rough Trade East round the corner and decided to finally try it tonight (Shane about the shambles trying to get home on our train network after), the service was really good and friendly and all three courses I had were top notch: surprised by some of the negative comments on here, I can?t fault anything I had but I don?t know what the other people were expecting: it?s not your run of the mill restaurant (don?t worry folks, Harvester and Toby Inns are still available for you more discerning gourmets ?) but I?m glad I tried it.

I was taken here by a visitor who let a graduate student choose anyplace for lunch.. what a nightmare! it is expensive, tiny portions, weird food saturated with mustard, terrible patronizing service - I'd give it a minus star if I could. To top this off, a day after eating here I was admitted to hospital where I languished for 3+ days, wiht acute, severe gastroenteritis. Now, 10 days later, I am finally recovered. The service was rude and scarce: we were given three smallish pieces of bread and ONE pat of butter. when I asked for more butter the waitress literally tossed another small dish with one pat on our table and glowered at us. later on I asked for some spoons so we could serve ourselves some of the lamb and whatever kind of grain was under it, she about 10 minutes later, haughtily dropped three spoons, clattering, on our table. Not only was the service terrible but the food practically inedible, and I love to experiment with foods. But this is too much - and SO expensive for what you get. I am truly surprised at its reputation. was at a party a few days ago (not eating, but just visiting wiht friends) and when they head about this experience, one said, without my having mentioned the name of hte restaurant that made me ill, "Wow, that sounds like it might have been St. John and Bread"! Needless to say, I won't be coming ack.
