Habitat was originally founded by Sir Terence Conran in 1964, opening the first store in Chelsea, London. The unique store design and high quality homeware products quickly attracted upmarket customers and Habitat's popularity grew. With an emphasis on expansion, more stores were soon opened across the UK and acquisitions were made internationally to widen the brand's reach even further. In 1981, the company's shares were made available on the London Stock Exchange and experienced significant growth in the following years, merging with Mothercare and BHS, as well as purchasing other smaller furniture retailers. However, since the start of the 21st century, the business has hit troubled waters and entered administration in 2011, which eventually saw them bought out by the Home Retail Group. Within the last year Sainsbury's PLC purchased Home Retail Group and very soon you will see mini habitat stores within Sainsbury's supermarkets across the UK. The Habitat brand lives on.
