After being founded 164 years ago in 1853, Halifax was named after its hometown. Around 60 years later, they were the largest building society in the UK and continued to grow moving forward. For the longest time, they remained as a building society before finally becoming a public limited company in 1997. Back in 2006, they became a strong division of the Bank of Scotland before the Lloyds takeover in 2009.
After these two acquisitions, Halifax saw some huge changes which caused a shift in their customer base. In total, they now have 800 branches across the UK as well as many ATMs. However, they are perhaps best known for their many advertising campaigns which all seemed to start with 'Howard' who soon became a national phenomenon. After appearing in these ads, he went on to appear in many other TV roles including The Office and Halifax has continued along this path ever since.
