Although the majority of the banks and building societies in the UK are home-grown, there is one option from Spain that has been making waves in recent years and this is, of course, Santander. Despite being founded all the way back in 1857, a number of acquisitions in recent years has seen them expand into much of Europe as well as Asia, Latin America, and North America. For the UK, the most notable acquisition was of Abbey National who have now rebranded under 'Santander'.
For Santander UK, there are now over 1,000 branches across the UK with 50 different corporate business centres. As a result, they employ 20,000 people around the country and have 14 million active customers which makes them one of the largest banks around. In addition to their banking products, Santander is also known for sponsorship reasons within sport including McLaren F1 at a time where Brits Jensen Button and Lewis Hamilton were driving for the team.
