Attended the WSET level 1 wines Saturday led by Guy. It was an informative, enjoyable experience, made so by Guy's entertaining teaching methods. Would recommend.

Poor, in every respect. This is just not a decent or serious wine retailer, either in terms of customer service or, more importantly, the storage of their wines. While understanding the company policy in relation to sampling a limited number of styles of wines is in place both for drink-driving and filtering out those going into a wine shop for a free snifter, the staff should be better prepared to sort the serious buyers from the freeloaders. Blanket applied, I find the policy incredibly patronising. While it is right that there is a filter mechanism, the store managers need more training on the implementation in order to discern who is taking the pith and who is walking in and making intelligent comments on the wine that's being sampled. To the wine. There was a "knock down" of a 1996 Bordeaux with half the cork in the bottle. It was down to £20, ostensively from £40 (or some such sales bull) but quite drinkable. Not aware of vintage pedigree pre 2005, I asked the store manager how the 96 vintage stacked up, to be told on his internet search that, I subsequently learned on getting home, it was a better vintage than is the reality. So to the wine. On being politely but somewhat curtly being told samplings are limited to three for those driving (are you serious?), I elected to diplomatically pay up and shift out of dodge by the fastest route possible (to the extent I didn't even want the store manager helping me to my car with 12 bottles of wine). When I got said wine home, and the label damaged, half a cork in the bottle when tasting in store, and opened a bottle up the following night to accompany a cheese plate, this came the point at which I decided to provide a review.Like the sample bottle in the shop, the cork in the first of the five bottles of the 1996 I opened shattered. And I mean shattered, even after taking steps to put the corkscrew well down into the cork to avoid this problem. Then, on abstraction and inspecting the cork, while blackened at its "seat" (as should be expected for a wine of this age) it was as dry as a bone, indicating vertical storage for around or at least 3 years prior to opening. Beyond that, if I open any bottle of 20 year old wine from my cellar (were all aging reds are horizontal) where a wine has a sediment, there will be an area inside the bottle where it is clear the fine particulates have separated out, (and more sediment can normally be removed by decanting). If a bottle has been correctly stored, the sediment will in part be stuck to the side of the bottle. Not so this bottle of wine. No 'side of bottle' sediment evidence whatsoever, concluding the incorrect vertical storage point, initially witnessed by a dry and shattering cork. What's more, the particulates that had not settled ended up in the glass on the pouring of the first two glasses. This would be a total embarrassment to pour to any guest. It was like sampling wine poured in a sawmill, with the amount of sediment, beyond the bits of fractured cork that ended up bobbing about in the glass. Discount be blowed, these bottles of wine tell a sorry story. My first experience. My last. And because? My conclusion is Laithwaite's are rather poor at what they are doing (and, apparently, at £20 paid for a label damaged knock down product, that price is still £3 over market value).I won't be back, probably to both Laithwaite's and my satisfaction. Shrewsbury here I come.

My family and I have been customers of Laithwaites Wine for approximately 30 years. The wines are of an excellent quality and never disappoint. I am very privileged to receive regular quarterly telephone calls from the knowledgeable, helpfull and experienced Diana Waite who is my personal advisor and based in Gloucester. She is a lovely lady who provides me with recommendations of which wines to choose. Diana knows and understands my taste and price ranges. Shes an asset to the Company and her Clients. Ordering from Laithwaites you won't be disappointed. Many Thanks.
